How To Cook A Perfectly Hard-Boiled Egg

Timing is an essential key when cooking hard-boiled eggs.

Did you know, there are about 100 ways to cook an egg?! I can only name a handful let alone 100! But how about a boiled egg? It’s one of the most commonly known ways to have your eggs cooked. Have you ever thought that maybe you were cooking them incorrectly. I didn’t think anything of it, I just figured you put the eggs in a boiling pot of water, leave them in there for about 20 minutes  and hope that they were cooked. I didn’t know the difference between overcooked eggs all I cared about was making sure they were cooked.  Don’t get me wrong! They’re edible, it’s not like you’d be sick after eating them but they’d be dry. In cooking school, I learned timing is an essential key when cooking hard-boiled eggs. They have to be removed from the hot water and immediately placed in cold water to stop the cooking process after your desired time. This is very similar when cooking pasta noodles, have you ever let your noodles sit after draining and came back to find that they were soft and mushy? The reason for that is even when you drain the water the noodles have still obtained heat continuing the cooking process BUT when you run it under cold water it stops it. The same technique is used when cooking boiled eggs. Also, I’ve found that peeling hard-boiled eggs under cold-running water makes it easier. Your goal, is for the egg white and yolk to fully set (not runny) and the color of the yolk be a vibrant, bright yellow. I love cooking a big batch of hard-boiled eggs and using them for salads, on toast for breakfast, my dad’s favorite “deviled-eggs” and more. Hope this helps! Enjoy!


An overcooked egg




First, place eggs in one layer in a pot (NOT on top of each other). Fill it up with cold water and add a dash of salt. Heat to high-boil. Once the water starts boiling, take off the heat and cover with lid. Set timer to 11 minutes. Immediately drain water and let eggs sit in ice-cold water or have cold water running on them.


Once the eggs have cooled, peel egg shells under cold running water. If the egg shells come off easily it means they are ready! Enjoy!
